American Express business cards connect to QuickBooks through the bank feed, but that link is one of the most frequently reported sync problems in QuickBooks: charges arrive late, supplemental cards drop off, and a security rule change between Amex and Intuit can cut the feed without warning. If you are catching up months of books, onboarding a bookkeeper, or closing out a year, upload an American Express PDF statement at the top of this page and get a QuickBooks-ready file that covers the full billing period.
The converter turns an American Express card statement PDF into a .qbo Web Connect file that imports into QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Desktop, plus matching Excel and CSV copies. Every charge keeps its date, description, and amount, and the parsed total is checked against the statement balance before you export. This page covers how Amex connects to QuickBooks, why transactions go missing, and how to import the file for any month.
Built for the statements US banks actually send, checked before it exports.
The converter adds up the transactions it parsed and matches that to the statement total before you export, so nothing is silently dropped.
Valid OFX 1.02 with QuickBooks Web Connect headers. Online and Desktop import it as a standard bank feed.
OCR runs before parsing, so a scanned or photographed paper statement comes out the same as a digital PDF.
Bulk upload for catch-up and cleanup work. Each file gets its own reconciliation check and its own exports.
Enter the password on upload. Multi-column and multi-page statement layouts are parsed too.
One conversion, three files: the .qbo for QuickBooks, an XLSX to review, and a CSV for everything else.
Three steps. No column-mapping wizard.
Drag in a PDF, a scan, or a phone photo. Password-protected and multi-page files are fine.
Every transaction is extracted and checked against the statement total. You see the parsed rows before exporting.
Download the .qbo and import it as a Web Connect bank feed. Excel and CSV are in the same download.

Last updated July 2026. Every way an American Express card statement can reach a QuickBooks credit card account, side by side, so you can see where the Amex feed falls short and where converting the PDF fills the gap.
| Route into a QuickBooks credit card account | Accepted file | History it reaches | American Express constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks Online, Link account (live feed) | Automatic, no file | Recent activity from around the connect date, no backfill | Supplemental and employee cards often sync only the primary cardmember, and a data sharing rule change between Amex and Intuit breaks the link |
| QuickBooks Online, Upload from file | .qbo, .qfx, .ofx, .csv, max 350 KB and 1,000 lines | Any billing period you still hold a PDF for | The register must be typed Credit Card, not Bank, or charges and payments post the wrong way against the balance |
| QuickBooks Desktop, Import Web Connect | .qbo only | Any billing period you still hold a PDF for | Same daily delays and history limits as Online, and it rejects .qfx, .ofx and .csv outright |
| American Express export, Statements and Activity | CSV or OFX you download | Only the cycles you download | A CSV does not import itself; you map and add each row by hand and it stops being a clean bank feed file |
| This converter, PDF to .qbo | PDF or image in; .qbo, Excel and CSV out | As far back as you have statements, including cards you have since closed | Posts to a credit card account with charges as increases and payments as decreases, totaled against the statement before export |
In QuickBooks Online, go to Transactions, then Bank transactions, select Link account, and search for American Express Business. Sign in with your Amex Business credentials and authorize the connection, then map each card to a QuickBooks credit card account. New charges then flow into the bank feed for review. The link covers eligible Business cards; some products are not supported.
American Express not syncing is usually caused by expired login credentials, a security or data-sharing rule change between Amex and QuickBooks, the account already being linked elsewhere, or an Amex-side delay. Amex updates the feed about once a day, and new charges can take up to 10 business days to appear, so gaps are common. Convert the statement to fill them.
With delegate or supplemental setups, the connection often syncs only the primary cardmember and skips the employee or supplemental cards, so their spend never reaches QuickBooks. The same gap appears when Amex changes how it shares card data. Download the full Amex statement, which lists every card's charges, and convert it to a .qbo so nothing is missed.
The American Express bank feed brings in recent activity from around the date you connect and does not backfill older history, so anything before the connection or beyond the feed's window never lands in QuickBooks. If you are catching up months of books or closing a prior year, convert each monthly Amex PDF statement and import the full period.
Sign in to americanexpress.com, open Statements & Activity, choose the billing period you need, and download it as a PDF. American Express posts a statement for each closed billing cycle, including supplemental card activity. Save the months you still need in QuickBooks, then upload each one to the converter above.
Convert the Amex PDF to a .qbo file with the tool above, then import it. In QuickBooks Online, go to Transactions, then Bank transactions, then Upload from file, and select the .qbo. In QuickBooks Desktop, use File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files. Choose the matching credit card account and the charges land in the review queue for coding.
Yes. American Express is a credit card, so the converter builds a .qbo that posts to a QuickBooks credit card account rather than a checking account. Charges show as increases to the balance and payments as decreases, matching how the statement reads. Select the right credit card account on upload and reconcile against the statement closing balance.
American Express lets you download activity as a CSV or OFX from Statements & Activity, but a CSV does not import itself into QuickBooks; you map and add each row by hand, and it stops being a clean bank-feed file. For a file that drops straight into the QuickBooks review queue, download the PDF statement and convert it to a .qbo with the tool above.
American Express supports Web Connect for QuickBooks Desktop, but Desktop users hit the same daily delays and history limits as Online, and Amex has changed Desktop bank-feed access more than once. A converted .qbo imports into Desktop through File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files for any statement period, independent of the live connection.
Yes. Unlike many fintech card programs, American Express is a bank: its cards and accounts are issued by American Express National Bank, a Member FDIC institution. That means an Amex Business statement is a true card statement you can reconcile, and the converter reads it the same way it reads any bank or credit card PDF.
An Amex statement lists each charge and payment in date order with the merchant description and amount, grouped by card for supplemental accounts, with the previous balance, payments, new charges, and closing balance. The converter skips the rewards summaries and account messaging, so only real transactions reach your .qbo. It reads native downloads and scanned PDFs through OCR.
Accuracy matters most, because a converter that drops or misreads a charge costs more time than it saves and usually surfaces weeks later at reconciliation. This tool totals the transactions it parsed and checks that figure against the statement totals before you export, so the .qbo reflects every line Amex printed. You review the parsed rows, then export once they tie out.
Upload a PDF, see every transaction extracted in seconds. No card to try it.
