Upload your bank statement

Relay is online business banking built for small businesses, accountants, and bookkeepers, with a direct bank-feed integration into QuickBooks Online and Xero. Its strength is that each of the up to 20 checking accounts you open can sync as its own feed in QuickBooks, which keeps clients organized. The limit is that the live feed only carries activity forward from the day you connect it, so older months, a closed account, or a sub-account you never linked do not flow in. Upload a Relay PDF statement at the top of this page and get a QuickBooks-ready file for any period.

The converter turns a Relay bank PDF statement into a .qbo Web Connect file that imports into QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Desktop, plus matching Excel and CSV copies. Every transaction keeps its date, description, and amount, and the parsed total is checked against the statement total before you export. This page covers how Relay connects to QuickBooks, who Relay's bank is, and how to import the file for any month a new bookkeeper needs.

A real .qbo file QuickBooks accepts

Built for the statements US banks actually send, checked before it exports.

Reconciliation

Every total checked against the statement

The converter adds up the transactions it parsed and matches that to the statement total before you export, so nothing is silently dropped.

Web Connect

A genuine .qbo, not a renamed CSV

Valid OFX 1.02 with QuickBooks Web Connect headers. Online and Desktop import it as a standard bank feed.

OCR

Scans and phone photos read line by line

OCR runs before parsing, so a scanned or photographed paper statement comes out the same as a digital PDF.

Volume

A year of statements in one batch

Bulk upload for catch-up and cleanup work. Each file gets its own reconciliation check and its own exports.

Locked files

Password-protected PDFs handled

Enter the password on upload. Multi-column and multi-page statement layouts are parsed too.

Exports

Excel and CSV in the same download

One conversion, three files: the .qbo for QuickBooks, an XLSX to review, and a CSV for everything else.

How to convert your statement to QuickBooks

Three steps. No column-mapping wizard.

1

Upload the PDF statement

Drag in a PDF, a scan, or a phone photo. Password-protected and multi-page files are fine.

2

Review the reconciled rows

Every transaction is extracted and checked against the statement total. You see the parsed rows before exporting.

3

Import into QuickBooks

Download the .qbo and import it as a Web Connect bank feed. Excel and CSV are in the same download.

Questions worth answering

The specifics that decide whether the import is clean. If your case is not here, email [email protected].

Does Relay integrate with QuickBooks Online?

Yes. Relay has a direct bank-feed integration with QuickBooks Online and Xero that syncs transactions into your books without skipping or duplicating them. When you connect, every Relay checking account is selected by default, and you can de-select any you do not want feeding into QuickBooks. The feed runs forward from the connection date, so it does not pull in history from before you linked the account.

Does Relay bank come with QuickBooks?

Relay does not include a QuickBooks subscription, but it connects to one. Relay is built around the accountant and bookkeeper workflow, so it offers a reliable QuickBooks Online bank feed plus bill-pay syncing of vendors, unpaid bills, and payments. You still keep your own QuickBooks plan; Relay supplies the banking data and feeds it in for categorizing and reconciling.

Who is Relay's bank?

Relay is a financial technology company, not a bank, and banking services are provided by Thread Bank, Member FDIC. Through Thread Bank's cash sweep, balances can be FDIC-insured up to 3 million dollars. Before 2023, Relay's partner bank was Evolve Bank and Trust, so older statements may show a different sponsor, which is worth checking when you reconcile early history.

Is Relay the same as Thread Bank?

They are not the same. Relay is the fintech platform and app you log in to, while Thread Bank is the chartered, FDIC-member bank that actually holds the funds and clears the transactions. On a statement and inside QuickBooks you may see Thread Bank named as the institution rather than Relay, so connect and reconcile using the account and routing numbers instead of relying on the brand name alone.

Why doesn't Relay backfill older transactions into QuickBooks?

Relay's bank feed starts on the day you connect the account, so anything before that point will not appear in QuickBooks through the integration. That leaves a gap when a bookkeeper onboards a client mid-year, when you start books late, or when you reconcile a prior period. Convert each Relay monthly statement to a .qbo and import it, and the earlier months land with nothing missing.

Can I import statements from more than one Relay account?

Yes. Relay lets a business open up to 20 checking accounts, and each one generates its own bank feed in QuickBooks, which is why accountants use it to apportion operating, payroll, and tax funds. For any account you chose not to connect, or for history before you linked it, download that account's statement and convert it to a .qbo so each set of transactions imports into the matching QuickBooks account.

How do I export Relay transactions for QuickBooks?

You can export a Relay account's activity to a CSV from the dashboard, but a CSV does not post itself into QuickBooks; you map the columns and add it manually. For a file that imports directly into the QuickBooks review queue, download the statement as a PDF and convert it to a .qbo with the tool above. That keeps each transaction's date and description intact, ready to match against your Relay balances.

How do I download a Relay statement as a PDF?

Sign in to Relay, open the checking account you want, and go to the statements or documents area. Choose the month and download the statement as a PDF. Relay issues a monthly statement per account, so for a multi-account setup, save each account's statement separately, and the converter reads each one the same way it reads a single download.

How do I import a Relay statement into QuickBooks?

Convert the Relay PDF to a .qbo with the converter above, then import it. In QuickBooks Online, open Transactions, then Bank transactions, then Upload from file, and select the .qbo. In QuickBooks Desktop, use File, then Utilities, then Import, then Web Connect Files. QuickBooks asks which account the transactions belong to and routes them into the review queue, exactly like the live Relay feed.

What does a Relay statement look like to the converter?

Relay statements list transactions in date order with a description and an amount, separating deposits, transfers between accounts, card spend, and any fees, with opening and closing balances for the period. The converter ignores the summary panels and account details so only real transactions reach your .qbo file. It also reads scanned or exported PDFs through OCR the same way it reads a native download.

How accurate is the converted Relay file?

Accuracy is what matters most, because a converter that drops or misreads a line costs more time than it saves, and the error usually surfaces during reconciliation. This tool adds up the transactions it parsed and checks that figure against the statement total before it lets you export, so the .qbo reflects every line the Relay statement printed. You review the parsed rows in the preview, then export once the numbers tie out.
