When you switch to QuickBooks from Xero, Wave, or FreshBooks, the migration moves your lists and balances but rarely brings clean, dated bank transaction history. A Xero conversion carries only a limited window and drops the reconciliation history, while Wave and FreshBooks have no official bank-feed converter at all, so activity comes over as a CSV you re-enter or summarize. The reliable way to land real bank transactions for any month is to convert each old bank statement PDF into a .qbo file and upload it, so every transaction posts with its true date, description, and amount.
Last updated June 2026. Migration scopes and conversion tools change; confirm what your specific path transfers before you rely on it.
Moving accounting software is the moment your books are most exposed. The migration tool, whether it is Intuit's free Xero converter, a paid service like Dancing Numbers or MMC, or a manual CSV export out of Wave, focuses on getting your chart of accounts, customers, vendors, and open balances into QuickBooks. Bank transaction detail is the part that comes over thin or not at all, and it is the part you need to reconcile and to file an accurate return.
The converter at the top of this page handles that gap. It turns the bank statements you already have into .qbo Web Connect files QuickBooks imports the same way it imports a live feed, so you can rebuild a full year of checking and credit card activity in a few minutes per statement instead of typing it or stitching together half-mapped CSVs. Below is what each common path actually transfers, and how to fill in what it leaves out.
| Switching from | Bank transactions transferred | Reconciliation history | How to backfill the rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xero | Limited window, varies by tool | Not transferred | Convert older statements to .qbo |
| Wave | None automatic; manual CSV export | Not transferred | Convert each statement to .qbo |
| FreshBooks | No official bank-feed converter | Not transferred | Convert each statement to .qbo |
| Spreadsheet or other software | Nothing automatic | None | Convert each statement to .qbo |
Two rules keep a switch clean. Import your bank statements oldest to newest so the QuickBooks register balance builds in the right order, and do not also turn on the live bank feed for a period you have already imported by file, or the same transactions land twice. The questions below cover the specifics for each platform.
Built for the statements US banks actually send, checked before it exports.
The converter adds up the transactions it parsed and matches that to the statement total before you export, so nothing is silently dropped.
Valid OFX 1.02 with QuickBooks Web Connect headers. Online and Desktop import it as a standard bank feed.
OCR runs before parsing, so a scanned or photographed paper statement comes out the same as a digital PDF.
Bulk upload for catch-up and cleanup work. Each file gets its own reconciliation check and its own exports.
Enter the password on upload. Multi-column and multi-page statement layouts are parsed too.
One conversion, three files: the .qbo for QuickBooks, an XLSX to review, and a CSV for everything else.
Three steps. No column-mapping wizard.
Drag in a PDF, a scan, or a phone photo. Password-protected and multi-page files are fine.
Every transaction is extracted and checked against the statement total. You see the parsed rows before exporting.
Download the .qbo and import it as a Web Connect bank feed. Excel and CSV are in the same download.

Partly. Intuit's free Xero conversion and paid services move your chart of accounts, customers, vendors, and a limited window of transactions, but the bank reconciliation history does not carry and older periods are often left out. Accounts arrive unreconciled, so convert the missing statements to .qbo and upload them to complete the history.
No, not automatically. Wave has no direct QuickBooks integration. You export your data as a CSV or Excel ZIP under Business Settings, then Data Export, and bring it in by hand, which often means summarizing older activity. For real dated bank transactions, convert each Wave-era bank statement to .qbo instead.
FreshBooks has no official bank-feed converter, so you export lists, re-create open invoices and bills, then bring in bank history separately. Download each bank statement for the period FreshBooks covered, convert it to a .qbo file, and upload it under Transactions, Bank transactions, Upload from file so the transactions reconcile.
No. Reconciliation history almost never survives a switch between accounting platforms. Migrated and imported transactions arrive unreconciled in QuickBooks. The standard fix is to reconcile each account in bulk up to your opening balance, then reconcile month by month against the statements going forward.
It depends on the tool. Intuit's free converter typically covers the current and prior fiscal year, while paid services can convert more for a fee. Anything outside that window does not come over, so download the older Xero-period statements and convert them to .qbo to fill the gap yourself.
Not for the basics. Intuit offers a free Xero to QuickBooks Online conversion that covers core lists and a recent window of transactions. Paid services exist for deeper history and complex files. If you only need the missing bank transactions, converting your old statements to .qbo is usually cheaper than a full paid reconversion.
Use Upload from file. In QuickBooks Online go to Transactions, then Bank transactions, then Upload from file, choose the account, and select a .qbo or CSV covering the dates you need. In Desktop use File, then Utilities, then Import, then Web Connect Files. A converted statement gives you a ready .qbo for any month.
Because reconciliation status does not transfer between platforms. Every transaction that lands through a migration or a file import starts in QuickBooks as unreconciled, even if it was reconciled in your old software. Set the opening balance, then reconcile each account in bulk to the last known good statement balance.
Yes, but only for dates you have not already imported. The live feed pulls roughly the last 90 days. If you also import statements covering those same days, the transactions post twice. Connect the feed, note its earliest date, and import converted statements only for the period before it.
Import in date order and never overlap. Check your oldest existing transaction date under the Gear icon, then Chart of Accounts, then View register. Convert and upload statements that end just before it, and keep the live bank feed limited to dates the imports do not cover. QuickBooks also flags likely duplicates in For Review.
Yes. Set each account's opening balance as of your conversion date, then bring transactions in after it. If you also want history before the conversion date, do not just adjust the opening balance. Import the actual statements as .qbo files so the individual transactions exist and reconcile to each month.
Run the conversion for your lists and recent transactions, confirm the opening balances tie out, then backfill any missing bank history from statements. Convert each older statement to a .qbo file, upload it oldest to newest, and reconcile in bulk. That gets you accurate books without paying for a full multi-year reconversion.
Yes, for some sources. Intuit provides a free Xero to QuickBooks Online conversion and assisted moves from QuickBooks Desktop. Wave and FreshBooks are manual. Whichever path you use, bank transaction detail is the weak spot, so plan to convert old statements to .qbo to complete the picture.
The data conversion itself often runs within a day or two, but reconciling the migrated books takes longer. Most of the manual time goes into backfilling and reconciling bank history. Converting statements to .qbo in batches, a few minutes per month, is the fastest way to shorten that part.
Upload a PDF, see every transaction extracted in seconds. No card to try it.

Once your switch is done, keep the books accurate: import old bank statements into QuickBooks for anything older than the feed reaches, follow the convert bank statement to QuickBooks Desktop steps for a Desktop file, and if a converted file is rejected see why QuickBooks won't import a .qbo file. Bookkeepers moving several clients should read bank statement to QuickBooks for accountants, and the QBO file explainer covers the format. If your old platform exports activity as CSV, a CSV to QBO converter turns that file into one QuickBooks reads, a bank statement to Excel converter gives you a spreadsheet to reconcile the year against, and you can turn other PDF business documents into Excel while you rebuild the records.
