Short answer: QuickBooks Desktop is being wound down, not switched off. Intuit stopped selling new Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscriptions to US customers in September 2024, and it retires each Desktop version's connected services three years after release. Your software keeps opening and your company file keeps working after that date. What stops is payroll, payments and online bank feeds. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is the exception and is still actively sold with no announced end date.

Last updated August 2026. Intuit publishes discontinuation dates per version and has changed its Desktop plans more than once, so check the current notice for your exact edition before you make a decision.

The confusion is understandable, because two separate things happened close together. Intuit closed the door on new Desktop subscribers, and separately it kept running its normal three year service retirement cycle. Neither one deletes your data or bricks your software, but together they mean Desktop is a shrinking product for everyone outside Enterprise.

QuickBooks Desktop discontinuation dates

Each version loses its connected services roughly three years after it ships. Here is where the recent versions stand.

VersionServices endWhere it stands in August 2026
QuickBooks Desktop 2022May 2025Bank feeds, payroll and payments already off
QuickBooks Desktop 2023May 31, 2026Already past. This is the version pushing most migrations right now.
QuickBooks Desktop 2024September 30, 2027Still supported, roughly a year of runway left

What actually stops working after the discontinuation date

The distinction that matters is between the software and the services Intuit runs on its own servers. The software is yours and keeps running. The services are a subscription and they end.

What you lose on the date: QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, including tax table updates and automatic form filing, QuickBooks Desktop Payments for card and ACH processing, online bank feeds, the ability to email invoices and reports from inside Desktop, Shipping Manager, live technical support from Intuit, and security patches.

What keeps working: opening your company file, entering transactions by hand, running every report, printing, and your historical data. Nothing is deleted and the program does not expire.

The security patch point deserves more weight than it usually gets. An unpatched accounting application holding several years of customer and bank data is a real exposure, and it is the argument most accountants lead with when a client says they would rather stay put.

Is QuickBooks Desktop being phased out completely?

For the small business editions, effectively yes. Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus are closed to new subscribers, so the user base can only shrink. Existing subscribers have generally been able to renew, often at higher prices, but renewing buys time rather than a future. Enterprise is a different story: Intuit still sells it, still supports it, and has not announced an end date for it.

If you are on Pro or Premier, the realistic planning assumption is that you will move to QuickBooks Online at some point, and that you would rather choose the date than have a payroll deadline choose it for you.

What to do if your version is already discontinued

If you are running Desktop 2023 in the second half of 2026, your bank feed is already gone. You have three options, in rough order of how many people pick them.

Move to QuickBooks Online. The migration tool is free and Intuit offers assisted migration at no extra charge for many small businesses. This is the path Intuit is steering everyone toward, and it restores bank feeds, payroll and support in one step. Our guide to converting QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online covers what transfers, what does not, and the 60 day import window that catches people out.

Upgrade to a supported Desktop year. This works if you are an existing subscriber who can still renew, and it buys you until that version's own retirement date. It is a delay, not a fix, and each renewal has been getting more expensive.

Stay put and work manually. Viable if your file is mostly historical, or if you are running out the clock on a final tax year. You enter transactions by hand and you accept no security updates. Do not choose this if you process payroll.

Getting transactions in when the bank feed is off

This is the practical daily problem for anyone on a discontinued version, and it is worth being straight about. Intuit's discontinuation notices list uploading transactions alongside downloading them among the services that end, and community reports about older retired versions genuinely conflict: some users say manual Web Connect imports keep working, others say QuickBooks refuses the file. We are not going to promise you that importing a .qbo into a discontinued Desktop still works, because the honest answer is that it depends on the version and the sources disagree.

What is certain is the QuickBooks Online side. There you can upload a .qbo Web Connect file through Transactions, then Bank transactions, then Link account, then Upload from file, and it posts as a normal bank feed batch. That is why the reliable answer to a dead bank feed is to migrate rather than to work around it. Converting your PDF statements to .qbo and uploading them also solves the second problem waiting for you after migration, which is that a fresh QuickBooks Online bank connection only pulls about 90 days of history and leaves everything older to you. If you would rather review the same statements as a spreadsheet before anything touches the books, you can turn the PDFs into an Excel file and check the categories first.

Frequently asked questions

Will QuickBooks Desktop stop working in 2026?

No. The software does not stop working and your company file does not expire. QuickBooks Desktop 2023 lost its connected services on May 31, 2026, meaning payroll, payments, online bank feeds, emailing from within QuickBooks, and security updates. You can still open the file, enter transactions manually and run every report.

When is QuickBooks Desktop going away?

There is no single shutdown date. Intuit retires each version's services about three years after release: 2022 ended in May 2025, 2023 ended May 31, 2026, and 2024 ends September 30, 2027. New Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscriptions stopped being sold to US customers in September 2024. Enterprise has no announced end date.

Is QuickBooks Enterprise going away?

Not currently. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is the one Desktop product Intuit still actively sells and supports, and no discontinuation date has been announced for it. Enterprise subscriptions still receive updates and support, which is why larger and inventory heavy businesses have generally stayed on it rather than moving to QuickBooks Online.

Can I keep using QuickBooks Desktop after support ends?

Yes, with real caveats. The application keeps running and your data stays intact, so many businesses keep a discontinued copy purely to read prior years. Running your live books on it is riskier: there are no security patches, no bank feed, no payroll tax tables and no Intuit support if something breaks. Most accountants treat it as an archive, not a working system.

Do I lose my data if I do not migrate?

No. Your company file is a local file and it stays on your machine whether or not you migrate. Keep it archived and openable even after you move, because your Desktop audit trail and your prior reconciliation reports do not transfer to QuickBooks Online and the Desktop file becomes the only place they exist.

Is it free to move from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online?

The migration tool is free, and Intuit offers assisted migration through its Solution Providers at no additional cost for many small businesses. You pay for the QuickBooks Online subscription you move into. Paid third party services exist for large files or unusual data the free tool cannot handle.

The short version

QuickBooks Desktop is not being switched off, but it is being wound down everywhere except Enterprise, and each version quietly loses its bank feed, payroll and security updates three years after it ships. If your version is already past that date, the decision is not whether to move but when. When you do move, the two things worth preparing early are your prior reconciliation and beginning balance figures, which do not come across, and a plan for the older bank history that a new QuickBooks Online connection will not reach. Both are easier to handle before you cancel Desktop than after.
