TaxJar publishes its prices and Avalara mostly does not, but the common claim that Avalara publishes nothing at all is wrong. Avalara lists a Tax Calculation and Returns Compliance Package starting at $699, license guidance from $119, and sales tax registration at $403 per location. TaxJar lists Starter at $39 a month and Professional at $99 a month. The catch nobody flags: those TaxJar figures are the 200 orders per month tier, not flat prices, so both plans cost more as your order volume rises.

Last updated September 2026. Every figure below was read from avalara.com, taxjar.com and stripe.com in September 2026. Both vendors price by volume and negotiate, so treat published numbers as entry points rather than quotes. We sell a bank statement converter, not sales tax software, so we have no stake in which of these you pick.

What Avalara actually publishes

Avalara's pricing page is mostly a form. AvaTax, its calculation engine, has no published tier price, and the page says outright that pricing varies by the products you buy, how many business applications you integrate, monthly sales transaction volume, how many states or jurisdictions you collect and remit in, and whether you are enrolled in the Streamlined Sales Tax program. What it does give you is three concrete numbers.

Avalara itemPublished priceWhat it covers

Avalara Sales Tax Registration$403 per locationRegistering your business to collect in a jurisdiction

The Streamlined Sales Tax angle is the one worth asking about, because it is the only route to genuinely free compliance at the entry level. Avalara notes that 25 states cover the costs for qualified sellers under the program. If your nexus footprint is concentrated in SST member states and you meet the volunteer seller criteria, a large slice of the calculation and filing cost can be paid by the states rather than by you. Sellers who already have a physical presence in a state usually do not qualify, so check the criteria before you plan around it.

What TaxJar charges, and the number everyone misreads

TaxJar publishes two plans, and this is where most comparison articles go wrong. The $39 and $99 headline prices are attached to a specific order volume tier of 200 orders a month. TaxJar's own page tells you to calculate your average monthly sales, refunds and returns to find the right tier. Cross 200 and the price moves up. Both plans carry a 30 day free trial and save 10 percent or more when paid annually.

AutoFile is the part to price properly. A credit files one return in one state for one period. If you are registered in six states and file quarterly, that is 24 filings a year. Professional includes four, so the other 20 cost $55 each, about $1,100 on top of the subscription. Work out your filing count before comparing subscription prices, because for a multi state seller the filing credits usually cost more than the plan does.

The Stripe question hiding underneath TaxJar

Stripe owns TaxJar, and TaxJar's own pricing page points Stripe customers toward Stripe Tax instead. That is an unusually candid signal from a vendor and it changes the shortlist. Stripe Tax's entry option has no recurring fee at all: you pay 0.5 percent per transaction on no code integrations, in the places where you are registered to collect. If your sales already run through Stripe Billing, Checkout, Invoicing or Payment Links, that can be dramatically cheaper than a subscription, and dramatically more expensive if your average order value is high. Stripe's API integration is priced per transaction on a separate schedule, so check the current US figure on Stripe's own pricing page rather than trusting a comparison post.

Where QuickBooks Online alone is enough

Plenty of businesses buy sales tax software they do not need. QuickBooks Online already calculates rates by address across US jurisdictions, tracks the liability, produces a sales tax liability report in the shape a state return wants, and warns you when your sales approach a state's economic nexus threshold. For a single state seller filing quarterly, that is the whole job, and the cost is zero on top of the subscription you already pay. Our guide to setting up sales tax in QuickBooks Online covers the setup order and the one switch you cannot undo.

The ceiling is registration, filing and notices. QuickBooks does not register you in a new state, does not file and remit in every state, and does not manage state correspondence. So the honest decision rule is a count, not a feeling.

That last row is not filler. Both vendors calculate tax from the sales data you feed them, and neither reconstructs a quarter of missing deposits. If sales tax is one obligation among several you are tracking across states, a dedicated compliance obligation tracker handles the calendar side better than any tax engine does, while the tax engine handles the arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Avalara cost?

Avalara does not publish a standard AvaTax subscription price. It does publish a Tax Calculation and Returns Compliance Package starting at $699, license guidance from $119, and sales tax registration at $403 per location. Everything else is quoted based on the products you buy, your integration count, monthly transaction volume, the number of jurisdictions you collect in, and Streamlined Sales Tax enrollment.

How much does TaxJar cost?

TaxJar Starter is $39 a month and Professional is $99 a month at the 200 orders per month tier, with 10 percent or more off for annual payment and a 30 day free trial. Both prices rise with your monthly order volume. Starter includes 2 free AutoFile credits a year at $50 each after that, Professional includes 4 at $55 each.

Is TaxJar cheaper than Avalara?

At the entry level, usually yes, and TaxJar is also the only one of the two you can price without talking to sales. The comparison flips as complexity grows. Once you need exemption certificate management, many jurisdictions, ERP integration and audit support, Avalara's scope is wider and the two stop being alternatives for the same job.

Does TaxJar belong to Stripe?

Yes. Stripe acquired TaxJar and continues to run it as a separate product. TaxJar's own pricing page tells Stripe customers that Stripe Tax might be the better fit for them, so if your payments already run through Stripe it is worth pricing Stripe Tax before buying a TaxJar subscription.

Do I need sales tax software if I have QuickBooks Online?

Not if you collect in one state and file quarterly. QuickBooks Online calculates rates by address, tracks the liability, produces the liability report and alerts you on economic nexus thresholds. You need a dedicated product when you must register and file across several states, manage exemption certificates, or handle state notices at volume.

What is AutoFile and why does it cost extra?

AutoFile is TaxJar submitting a sales tax return on your behalf. One credit covers one return, in one state, for one filing period. Registered in six states filing quarterly means 24 returns a year, so a Professional plan with 4 included credits leaves 20 to buy at $55 each. For multi state sellers this often exceeds the subscription itself.

Does Avalara integrate with QuickBooks?

Yes. QuickBooks is one of Avalara's listed integrations, alongside NetSuite, SAP, Shopify, Sage, Salesforce and others. The integration pushes calculation to AvaTax and returns the tax to the invoice, which is why Avalara pricing depends partly on how many business applications you connect.

Can I get sales tax compliance for free?

Sometimes, through the Streamlined Sales Tax program. Avalara notes that 25 states cover the costs for qualified sellers. Eligibility generally requires that you are a volunteer seller without an existing physical presence in the state, so it fits remote ecommerce sellers far better than businesses with offices or inventory in those states.

Whichever engine you pick, the return is calculated from the transactions in your books, so a file that is missing deposits produces a wrong return at any price point. If you are catching up before a filing deadline, convert the missing PDF statements to a .qbo file, import them, reconcile, then file.
